The near anonymity of online interactions makes many things impossible in the real world, possible in the virtual one. In the show Catfish, Nev and his team partner with individuals in such relationships where no actual face-to-face meetings have occurred due to the other person’s evasion of the meeting request. What has been more damaging to the perception of the institution itself has been the battle over same-sex marriage. Due to the endless positive feedback that was showered upon Gen-Y kids throughout their lives, the young adults of this generation tend to be extremely confident — some would say overconfident. They also often have much higher salary expectations than entry-level positions actually pay, although this has been tempered somewhat by the Great Recession. Young adults not only marry and have children later than previous generations, they take more time to get to know each other before tying the knot.

As the first entirely digital generation and the largest demographic in western history, Generation Z, those born in the late 1990s and early 2000s, is the subject of extensive research. Often considered to be entitled, dependent and lacking real-life skills, these youth also display considerable resilience and creativity.
